General
· CA was founded in 1969.
· CA is an independent school with an enrollment of 300 students in 2011.
· The campus includes an administrative/high school building, gymnasium with Jr./Sr. high classrooms and computer lab, cafeteria, elementary building, pre-school (Little Red Schoolhouse), athletic stadium with a field house and practice field, baseball and softball fields, and several portable buildings that house the elementary computer lab, science lab, music/art room, Rebels’ and Lady Rebels’ locker rooms.
· In June 2010 a $100,000 infrastructure improvement began. Renovations included new lighting, ceiling tiles, flooring, lockers, bathrooms, and air conditioners.
Organizations/Affiliations
· Our school is accredited by Louisiana State Department of Education and Mississippi Association Independent Schools (MAIS). We currently hold the highest rating possible from both agencies.

Because CA is a non – profit organization all contributions are tax deductible.
As of 2011 tax year 100% of tuition, fees and certain educational supplies are tax deductible in the State of Louisiana up to $5000 per child.
Faculty/Staff
· 40 employees: Headmaster, Faculty Members, Business Manager, School Secretary, Cafeteria Manager, Bus Transportation Director.
· The Little Red Schoolhouse employs two fulltime teachers, as well as, two fulltime aids.
· Our teaching faculty holds certification through the MAIS, as well as, the State of Louisiana Department of Education.
· All faculty members hold certification in the subject area in which they teach. Several members hold a masters degree, or are currently enrolled in a masters program.
Governance
· CA is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors. These directors serve a three year term and may serve two consecutive terms. The Board meets monthly throughout the year and members serve without compensation.
· The Executive Board is comprised of a Chairman, President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The board also has several working committees including Transportation, Building and Grounds, Insurance, Nomination, Athletic, and Teacher.
· The Board has recently established a Board of Trustees whose mission is to oversee the newly developed Vision of Excellence: Endowment Committee. The goal of the campaign is to raise $300,000 over a three year period. This principal can never be used, and the “fund” is overseen by the above separate Board of Trustees.
Curriculum
· Little Red Schoolhouse – The preschool program offers an outstanding developmental education program for 3 and 4 year olds. Pre K utilizes a skills report card to develop a child intellectually, while daily hands-on activities provide a positive enrichment experience. Children receive the appropriate introduction to learning, with opportunity for social interactions.
· Elementary (grades K-6) – All elementary curriculum is state approved and updated annually according to the state textbook adoption program. The elementary curriculum also includes an enrichment component where music, art, library, computer, and drug and alcohol education is provided. In addition, students utilize the computerized reading program Accelerated Reader.
· Junior High (grades 7-8) and High School (grades 9-12) - Our secondary students have the opportunity to excel both academically and athletically. In accordance with the school’s mission, Claiborne Academy offers an intensive college preparatory curriculum that meets all State of Louisiana needs and TOPS guidelines. Seniors have available dual enrollment classes in college algebra and college trig are offered through LA Tech for six hours of college credit. All of our juniors are required to take the ACT test, and ninety-five percent of CA graduates enroll in college or an institution of higher education. The graduation rate is near 100%.
· CA competes annually in the MAIS State Art Competition, and the school consistently produces many district and state level winners.
· CA competes annually in the North Louisiana Literary Rally, Louisiana State Rally, Music Rally, and MAIS Spelling Bee (grades 4 – 8).
· Each year Claiborne Academy is well represented at the Claiborne Parish Scholastic Banquet. This program recognizes students who have scored 25 or higher on the ACT, have a 3.75 GPA (juniors) or 3.5 (seniors), or have advanced to the state literary rally.
· CA participates in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). This program identifies talented 7th grade students, and accesses their skills against those of college bound juniors and seniors. In order to qualify, a student must score in the 90th percentile on the math and reading sections of their standardized test.
· Students with a diagnosed learning disability, such as a 504, are often able to be pulled from a regular class setting to be provided modifications and tutoring.
Technology
· Each classroom is equipped with a Promethean Interactive Smart board and a laptop computer for enhanced learning capabilities.
· CA has internet connectivity in all buildings on the campus.
· CA houses two separate computer labs.
· Teachers use JPAMS, a computerized student information and grading system. Beginning in the 2011/2012 school year, this information will be available online to parents through the school’s website.
· CA maintains a website to keep parents apprised of schedules, upcoming events and current information.
Testing
· Students in grades 4 – 12 are required to participate in the summer reading program with testing to be during the first week of school in the fall.
· CA administers the Stanford Achievement Test in grades K5 through 9th, with the exception of 4th and 8th graders who take the LEAP. The school’s overall class average for the Stanford is approximately in the 75 percentile (the upper 25% of the students tested nationally).
· CA complies with the State Department of Education Testing program for public schools by administering the LEAP test in 4th and 8th grades. Ninety plus percent of the students successfully pass all portions of the LEAP during the spring testing period.
· The five year ACT average is approximately 21.5. This average is based on all students being required to test. The National average is 20 with the LA average being 19. We have had students score a perfect 36 on the math component of the ACT, and often have students score in the mid 30s.
Booster Club
An active Booster Club is vital to the success of the school. All parents should ensure that their active participation in their child’s education is demonstrated by their active membership in the Booster Club. The Booster Club sponsors several major events during the school year with the funds raised from these activities being used to offset a portion of school expenses. Fundraisers include the Back to School BBQ, Halloween Carnival, Cajun Night, Auction, Basket Raffle, and Money Raffle.
Scholarships
· Valedictorian /Salutatorian Scholarship: Being named as Valedictorian or Salutatorian represents the highest honor available to a high school student in the US for academic achievement. To commemorate this achievement, the Claiborne Academy Board of Directors made a commitment to create and financially support a Valedictorian and Salutatorian Scholarship. The student must have attended CA during their entire sophomore, junior, and senior years. The Valedictorian Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1000 and the Salutatorian Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $750. In the event of a tied GPA, percent averages will be used as a tiebreaker.
· Landon Hays Memorial Scholarship: The Class of 2005 established and funded a scholarship in memory of classmate Landon Hays. This scholarship honors the ideals and values that were most important to Landon. He loved the outdoors and took great pride in his school. Eligibility requires a graduating senior to embody these characteristics in addition to meeting the minimum GPA requirements of all CA scholarship considerations. A student must have a commitment to and demonstrated desire to support and become involved in CA extra-curricular activities. This award is in the amount of $500.
· Booster Club Scholarship: The priority for this award is given to a student whose parents are presently active members of the CA Booster Club. The student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 over seven semesters of high school work and have attended CA during their entire sophomore, junior, and senior years. They must have participated in at least two school organizations, clubs, or extra-curricular activities on a yearly basis and demonstrated involvement in service activities. This award is in the amount of $500.
· Math and Science Scholarship: This scholarship seeks to recognize our school's commitment to developing a challenging math and science curriculum that includes upper level math and science courses, as well as offering math courses that award college credit. The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding student who has consistently demonstrated excellence in these subject areas. This award is in the amount of $500.
· Student /Athlete Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a male and female student who has met the following criteria: overall GPA of at least 2.5, attended CA for their junior and senior years, participated in at least two major sports per year during their junior and senior years, and demonstrate the ability to succeed in athletic competition, as well as exhibiting positive leadership and good sportsmanship. This award is in the amount of $500 each.
· Minority Scholarship: The CA Minority scholarship is considered to be an academic scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to one or two students yearly based upon a student’s most recent standardized test scores, academic excellence demonstrated in core subjects and recommendations.
Lunch Program
CA provides a lunch program for students in all grades that includes daily choices of a hot plate lunch or a brown bag lunch. In addition, a morning break is also available. Orders and payment for lunch are due daily in the homeroom. Students also have the option to purchase a meal card for $85. The meal card is used for 20 meals. Menus are available at the beginning of each month and are posted on the CA website.

· CA Boys Basketball team is the defending MAIS state runner-up finishing last season with
a 27-6 record. In the 2011 season the team is ranked #2 in the MAIS with 20-1 record.
· CA Girls Basketball team is currently ranked #2 in the MAIS with an 18-3 record.
· The 2010 football team went 9-3, including 4-0 in district and were 8-A District Champs.
